With all of the discussion about the metaverse in the media over the last several months, you may be under the impression that it is already up for business. It seems that I am being given an item on a daily basis via my Google News feed, my Twitter feed, or even simply by surfing Reddit, it seems. Although there has been a lot of excitement about the metaverse, many people are still confused about what it truly is.
Despite the fact that Facebook has rebranded itself as Meta, the corporation was not the one who came up with the concept. According to Wikipedia, the phrase “metaverse” is derived from Neal Stephenson’s 1992 science fiction book “Snow Crash,” and the concept of a metaverse has appeared in a number of other science fiction works, such as “Ready Player One.”
As far as I can tell, the notion of the metaverse is still at a very early stage of development. The idea of putting on virtual reality headsets to virtually attend a work meeting or event is on one extreme, while people are already participating in a metaverse of sorts when they log into a massively multiplayer online role-playing game like “World of Warcraft” is on the other end of the spectrum. Gartner believes that current deployments of the technology result in a number of small metaverses, but that they will eventually merge.
Marty Resnick, research vice president at Gartner, said that vendors are already developing methods for customers to mimic their lives in virtual worlds. These activities, which range from attending virtual courses to purchasing digital land and building virtual houses, are presently carried out in different contexts. According to Zhao, “It requires some effort on the back end to ensure that it is not only linked, but also steady and of good quality for real-time traffic of audio or video data, as well as virtual environment data,” she said.
